The ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves (no radiation) to produce an image of the baby. As there is no radiation is involved, this is a safe test to undergo during pregnancy. How the pregnancy scans are performed? All the scans will be performed by a specialist Fetal and Maternal Medicine consultant in the presence of a chaperone. The room light will be optimised to visualise clear images on the screen. We will use a water based gel to achieve good contact between the scan probe and the skin. A gentle pressure would be needed at times to perform the detailed scan. During the scan the images will be displayed on the wall mount screen along with the screen on the scan machine. This will allow the parents to see the image and bond with the baby. How many scans are allowed in pregnancy? As scans are safe in pregnancy there is no limit to the number of scans one canhave during their pregnancy. Who will be performing the scans at P4 pregnancy? All scans will be performed by a specialist Fetal Medicine consultant, Dr Ashwini Bilagi at P4 Pregnancy. Will I get to see the same doctor every time? We, at P4 pregnancy believe in providing personalised care. We realise continuity of care is very important in conditions like pregnancy. Hence, you will be seen by the same specialist at every visit. It will be the same doctor performing the scan and consultation so you get comprehensive and holistic care. What is anomaly scan and when is it performed? Anomaly scans are one of the important scans during your pregnancy. This scan is usually performed between 18 to 23 weeks of pregnancy. A detailed assessment of the anatomy of your baby is carried out along with the check on the location of the placenta. During the scan we will be interacting with you and show you the detailed anatomy of the baby. The findings will be discussed with you in detail. If any abnormalities are detected, it would be discussed comprehensively and your hospital (where the pregnancy is booked) will be contacted and notified to arrange further management. We will provide you with a detailed scan report, scan images (printed) and USB stick with videos/images of the baby. What is fetal ECHO (echocardiography)? Structural heart differences are one of the common anomalies seen in the babies. Fetal echocardiography is a scan that examines baby’s heart in detail. This scan aims to rule out some of the structural heart differences. The optimum time to perform this test is around 19-24 weeks. This will be done by the Specialist Fetal Medicine Consultant. What is 3D/4D scan? A 3D scan is a still image of baby, a 4D scan is a moving image. The HDlive scan uses the latest in ultrasound technology to offer you an even clearer view of the baby. Ideal time to perform this scan is between 26-32 weeks. You will get a soft copy of pictures/videos and hard copies of the scan What is reassurance scan? This scan is performed to ensure wellbeing and the growth of the little one .We also check for umbilical blood flow studies along with liquor volume assessment. This will also help in bonding with the little one. What is uterine artery Doppler scan? Uterine arteries are the major feeding vessels to the womb. Studying the blood flow in these will help us assess the risk of two very common problems in pregnancy - blood pressure issues of pregnancy growth concerns of the little one.This scan is performed by Dr Bilagi,subspecialist Fetalmedicine consultant. What happens at the antenatal consultation at P4 pregnancy ? We understand pregnancy can be a challenging time for the women with all the physical,psychological and social changes. We aim to complement the care you are getting from national health services. Each appointment is about 30 minutes long with a consultant where the pregnancy care is comprehensively discussed Discussion of care and mode of delivery BP and urine Check Discussion of possible tests and their implications such as GBS, NIPT tests, baby scans What is covered in the antenatal care package? In this package you will be seen by Dr Bilagi throughout the pregnancy at regular intervals(approximately every month). You will get regular scans (~6-7 scans) and we will discuss your pregnancy care and guide you in making some decisions. We will also see you post delivery and plan the postnatal recovery. Team Ms Ashwini Bilagi Ms Ashwini Bilagi is a consultant in Fetal Medicine and Maternal Medicine at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBH). She is the clinical lead for the management of multiple pregnancies and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. She is in charge of multidisciplinary meetings for high-risk obstetric cases at SWBH. She is the research lead for obstetrics for the trust and the senior academic tutor for Aston Medical students. She is an external reviewer for the perinatal mortality and morbidity for our local maternity and neonatal network. Her present positions have enabled her to be a senior member of a team that provides the full range of specialist services within maternity care whilst also having an active involvement in teaching and research. She is the research lead for Obstetrics and has supervised an MD student from Aston University. She has extensive experience in the management of multiple pregnancies, complex Fetal medicine conditions and high-risk obstetrics. She maintains a keen interest in teaching and regularly conducts simulation training and OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) sessions for medical students.
